Common Questions

Venetian Plaster FAQ

What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster is a decorative wall and ceiling finish made from slaked lime and finely ground marble or limestone. Applied in thin layers with a steel trowel and burnished smooth, it produces a luminous, marble-like surface with remarkable depth — a look paint cannot replicate. The tradition dates back to ancient Rome and was perfected in Renaissance Venice.

How long does Venetian plaster last?

Properly applied lime-based Venetian plaster can last for decades. Because true lime plaster continues to cure and harden over time (a process called carbonation), a quality finish becomes more durable with age and resists cracking, fading, and wear far better than conventional paint.

Can Venetian plaster be used in bathrooms and kitchens?

Yes. For high-moisture areas such as bathrooms, showers, and kitchen backsplashes we recommend Tadelakt — a naturally water-resistant lime finish traditionally used in Moroccan hammams — or a sealed Venetian plaster. These finishes are breathable, mould-resistant, and beautifully suited to wet environments.

What is the difference between Marmorino and Grassello di Calce?

Both are lime-based Italian finishes. Marmorino contains coarser marble aggregate, giving a subtle stone-like texture and a matte-to-satin sheen. Grassello di Calce is a finer, highly polished lime putty that produces a glossy, mirror-smooth surface with striking movement and light. We help clients choose the finish that best suits their space.

Is Venetian plaster more expensive than paint?

Venetian plaster costs more than standard paint because it is a hand-applied, multi-layer artisan craft using premium natural materials. However, its exceptional longevity, timeless appearance, and the value it adds to a property make it a worthwhile long-term investment for luxury interiors.
